Exercise & Its Discontents, a Soliloquy
My doctor tells me I need more exercise, so I’ve taken up running for cardio and yoga for a relaxed and flexible golf swing. Time was, I could complete the full 90 minutes of P90X Yoga Training. Today, I did make it through the warm up… Mountain Pose, forward leg stretches, side stretches and, count ‘em, three (3) salutations, with our son’s miniature Australian Sheepdog joining me on Upward Dog… kinda.
My reward for this admittedly limited accomplishment is a swim in our unheated backyard pool. The water is cool and refreshing even on a hot southern California afternoon. As I swim past a circlet of feathers left by a songbird’s quick dip in the water in mid-flight, he perches pool-side to bill and preen.
I take particular care to avoid floating bees. If they have not drowned they sting painfully upon contact, as I learned late last week. Clearly, we need to hire a beekeeper to remove the wild bee hive under the birdbath to a nice comfy hive box somewhere… somewhere else. I do hope they aren’t Africanized bees, though. I’ll feel badly enough about discriminating between species.
